Sun Yat-sen University's Xiwai College, through its All-English Excellence Teaching Center, invited 18 students and faculty members from Josai University and Kagoshima International University in Japan to experience the English enhancement activities at the Xiwai International Salon on campus. The event strengthened cross-national exchanges and cooperation opportunities among the three institutions, allowing students to improve their English learning through technology, games, and sharing activities, while also gaining insights into different cultures.
The English Table activity, organized by the All-English Excellence Teaching Center at Sun Yat-sen University's Xiwai College, is a regular event aimed at helping students enhance their English proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills through diverse thematic discussions, sharing, and exchanges. During the event, Chen Ruihua, convener of the Xiwai International Salon and assistant professor at Xiwai College, facilitated icebreaker games for Japanese students to meet their counterparts from Sun Yat-sen University, fostering mutual understanding between students from the three schools, with both sides competing for scores in a lively atmosphere.
During the activity, students from both countries collaborated using tablets and the Quizizz app to answer questions related to Sun Yat-sen University and Kaohsiung, allowing them to learn about the city and the university and experience increased learning engagement through technology. Andy Worcester, an American English teacher at Xiwai College and a YouTuber, shared his experience of moving to Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and becoming an internet personality, providing students with valuable advice and insights. Additionally, American doctoral student Andrew Pruett facilitated the English Table activity at the Xiwai International Salon, allowing students to discuss cultural differences between Japan and Taiwan in groups and share their insights on stage.
Students and faculty members from Josai University and Kagoshima International University were impressed by Xiwai College's All-English Excellence Teaching Center and greatly enjoyed the English Table activity. Professor Wang Yongzhi from Josai University remarked that the activity allowed students and faculty from both institutions to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwanese culture, fostering increased communication and cooperation opportunities. While Josai University has similar English Corner activities, they are held only once a month. In contrast, Kagoshima International University currently does not have similar activities but focuses on improving English proficiency through student participation in overseas internships. Through sharing experiences, the three institutions learned from each other and hoped to further enhance English education.
Li Xianglan, Executive Director of the All-English Excellence Teaching Center at Sun Yat-sen University's Xiwai College, stated that the event not only fostered strong friendships among students and faculty from the three institutions but also laid a solid foundation for future international academic exchanges and cooperation. She also expressed hope that through this event, the three institutions could sign a memorandum of understanding for inter-school cooperation, explore more cooperation opportunities, and further promote the development of international academic exchanges.
Chen Ruihua mentioned that the event showcased the advantages and achievements of the All-English Excellence Teaching Center in promoting cultural exchanges and enhancing students' English proficiency internationally. It is hoped that Taiwanese and Japanese students, besides increasing interaction opportunities, can also become seeds for future cross-national exchanges and cooperation among the three institutions. In the future, Sun Yat-sen University's Xiwai College's All-English Excellence Teaching Center will continue to organize similar activities, allowing more students and faculty to participate and promoting cultural exchanges and cooperation internationally.
